Stepper motors are standardized by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) for mounting dimensions and flange size: NEMA 17, NEMA 23, NEMA 34, NEMA 42 - flange size 42 mm, 57 mm, 86 mm, 110 mm, respectively. NEMA 23 stepper motors can generate torque up to 30 kgf*cm, NEMA 34 up to 120 kgf*cm and up to 210 kgf*cm for motors with a 110 mm flange.
A stepper motor is a synchronous brushless motor with multiple windings in which a current applied to one of the stator windings causes the rotor to lock. Sequential activation of the motor windings causes discrete angular movements (steps) of the rotor.
